Wow Ashley! Great post! That's a real encouragement to me today. We had a long prayer meeting at our house yesterday evening, and I spent my lunch hour today praying some more about the concerns that were raised there. A lot of it was prayer for physical / spiritual healing. It's hard to deal with the space between our prayer and His answer. Any answer would feel better than the space! I've been going through the story of the Exodus with the boys in our devotional times at home, so the stories are fresh in my mind. I haven't been thinking about it in these terms though, so it's a good reminder. Thanks!

These past few months have been a growing period that I am truly thankful for (sorry to end in a preposition, my 6th grade English teacher would be appalled).

That is the sort of thing up with which I will not put! ;-)

Hi Karen,

I'm finally reading this! Yeah! It's been hectic for a while... Did we tell you yet that I'm pregnant with number three? We'll be the third couple with three in the group I guess. First the Ogletrees, the Browns, and now us.

Also, there are some interesting "then whats" surfacing with us right now. Write me back at our regular email and I'll tell you about them.

In Christ, Karalua

"We cannot take on ourselves the duty of self-discipline."
There is some ambiguity in the term "Self-discipline" Often, it's used synonymously with self-control. But you've used it here to mean punishing one's self by self-inflicted suffering. If that's the definition, then I guess I can agree that we shouldn't do that. I do believe Paul was speaking figuratively when he said he beat his body (I Cor. 9). Yet he did mean *something* by it. In Titus 2 Paul commanded Titus to teach and encourage the men to be self controlled. So while there's no benefit in self-flagellation, it is certainly necessary that we make an effort to develop self-control, and that does involve a degree of suffering. Of course, even then we rely on God's grace. In Titus 2, after commanding Titus to teach self control Paul goes on to say (vs. 11-12) that God's grace teaches us self-control. It's like Paul said in another place, "I struggle with all His energy..." The task of maturing in self-control is not solely ours to bear. God makes an effort to teach, we make an effort to learn.

Ha! I guess that's what I get for opening up comments Karen...Yes I wrote this post around 3am and was very tired at the time. Sorry for such blatant errors. I'm the world's worst speller, but I have never gotten Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison confused before! Corrections have been made:) Thanks for the input you guys...

This reminds me of something that I read last week. Time Magazine has an article about Mother Theresa. Unknown to even those who were very close to her, she experienced deep spiritual emptiness from the time she started ministering to the poor until her death, with only one short time of relief. The letters where she talks about her inner darkness were kept secret until just recently, and were made public against her wishes. Of course, Time Magazine spins up the story it like it's some kind of shocking revelation... still, the reality of the thing is thought provoking. We believe that we should be ministering out of the overflow of our love for Christ. It seems Mother Theresa was not doing that at all. If it were me, I would not proceed in ministry until I had found the Lord in it first, and if I lost His presence, I would stop the rest until I found it again. But this story shows how much a person can accomplish in the natural.

Hey Ashley,

You're right that most people that aren't Christians still have faith. It's usually misplaced faith such as faith in themselves or others, or faith in destiny or a dream. I think it's harder to have faith in God's plans for us because they are outside of our own vision. But we can at least have more faith in His love for us!!! How many times did Jesus say "Oh you of little faith!."

On another note, did you write this post late at night or something? Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, and a couple of words were misspelled. (disappointment and potato)
